UX and usability for public administration, universities and research

UX agency for the
public sector

We design digital services that people can understand and use. To do that we bring together user needs, departmental responsibilities, editorial workflows and the systems already in place.

Usability in public administration

UX connects use and organisation

Good user experience lets people find information and complete tasks without having to know the internal structure of an authority, a university or a federal organisation.

Responsibilities, editorial upkeep, accessibility and technical systems all shape the user experience. That is why they are considered from the concept stage onwards.

The shared structure connects

  • the tasks and the words people bring with them
  • departmental rules and responsibilities
  • editorial work, approvals and upkeep
  • the CMS, the interfaces and the technical room to manoeuvre

Do not pass the complexity on to the people using the service

Four layers that have to fit together before anything is built

We separate what is already settled, which assumptions still need testing, and who is able to make a decision.

  • People arrive with different tasks, different prior knowledge and different constraints.
  • Rules, terminology, exceptions and committees set the departmental frame.
  • Roles, permissions, approvals and upkeep shape the editorial day-to-day.
  • The CMS, the interfaces and the existing systems set the technical room to manoeuvre.

A concrete way in

UX audit for public services

The UX audit is an expert review of the most important tasks and user journeys of an existing service. Depending on where you stand, navigation, search, forms, filters, terminology and key content pages are part of the scope.

The audit suits administrative services, university platforms and clearly bounded user journeys.

What you receive

  • concrete findings along selected usage scenarios
  • prioritised obstacles with traceable locations
  • recommendations that account for departmental, editorial and technical conditions
  • a basis for a backlog, a relaunch, a statement of work or further user testing

The UX audit shows the obstacles that are apparent. A user test examines tasks under realistic conditions. An accessibility audit assesses and documents a defined sample against specified BITV or WCAG requirements. A conformity assessment additionally needs a clear scope, a stated validity and rules for re-testing.

One platform for decentralised editorial teams

Reusable page types and shared design rules support decentralised upkeep across many institutes and faculties.

  • information architecture for central and decentralised content
  • a design system and reusable page types
  • rules for editorial work, responsibilities and quality
  • Drupal delivery and ongoing development

We developed the information architecture and the design system, built both in Drupal, and continue to support the platform.

Involving people needs a clear remit

We establish which decision is due, who contributes knowledge and who carries the responsibility. That way departments, editorial teams, IT and external participants all work towards the same goal.

Accessible interaction from the start

Accessibility begins long before the finished interface

Accessibility belongs in research, information architecture, interaction design and development. That way terminology, content structures, focus order, states and error messages are not corrected only after the build.

  • In concept work and delivery we document accessible requirements for editorial teams, design and development.
  • For existing services, an accessibility audit assesses an agreed sample against BITV 2.0 or WCAG.
  • Once corrections are made, a conformity assessment with a stated validity and re-testing produces documented evidence.

Evidence from research and public administration

Real platforms show how complex data, audiences and editorial conditions are translated into clear interactions.

Making research data explorable

For the KonKoop atlas we translated complex research data into maps, filters and narrative routes into the material.

We designed the interactive research atlas and built it in Drupal.
